TRUTH Magazine was founded by Uriah Bell in response to a need/gap in the LGBT community/communities of color. While traveling in 2010 – 2011, Uriah realized that the only publications for people of color were very race specific and hetero-centric. In addition, publications targeting the LGBT communities were mainstream and lacked diversity; as well as these publications portrayed gay men as sex-crazed, and one dimensional and leveraged well-known faces to sell their product.
As an out, professional, educated Black man, Uriah didn’t see himself in any of the publications that were available. After listening to the stories of men and women across the U.S., Uriah recognized that he was not alone. There are hundreds, if not thousands of LGBT men and women of color that are seeking and craving more. They feel isolated, and at times disappointed in their community, and it’s subservience with regard to popular culture. These individuals are working hard to make great strides in the community and often lack visibility.
Inspired by the stories of these individuals, strength in numbers, and the idea of being the change we want to see in this world, Uriah, with a team of amazing and diverse individuals created TRUTH Magazine; encouraging people from all walks of life to stand in theirs. TRUTH focuses on the needs of LGBT people of color through arts/entertainment, politics, social activism, health and wellness, culture, travel, finance and education.
The individuals at TRUTH are determined to empower and inspire the LGBT communities of color and be the premier media source for LGBT people of color – everywhere.
